Judging Criteria
Teams are evaluated across three award areas plus a deliverables completion item, for a total of 100 base points. An additional +5 bonus points are awarded for confirmed Science Gateways poster submission, making the maximum possible score 105 points.

Science Gateways 2026 Poster Guide
Creating your team project poster fulfills a mandatory HackHPC deliverable, and officially submitting it to the Science Gateways 2026 (Gateways 26) conference earns your team an automatic 5-point bonus toward your final judging score.

1. Hackathon Deliverable Requirements
For the hackathon itself, your team must produce a visual poster summarizing your project.
- Format: The final poster must be submitted as a PDF file and added to your team's GitHub repository.
- Bonus Proof: To get the +5 bonus points, you must provide evidence (e.g., an email confirmation) that your poster was successfully submitted to the Gateways 2026 conference.
2. Gateways 26 Content & Abstract Requirements
To submit your poster to Gateways 26, you will need to prepare an abstract to be submitted via the EasyChair portal.
- Abstract Length & Format: The abstract must be 500 words or less and should be pasted directly into the submission portal form. Do not include references in this abstract text.
- Required Abstract Details: The abstract must describe your ongoing work/early-stage ideas, the impact it has on your user community, and any lessons you have learned.
- Content Guidelines — your work should address:
- Problem & Solution Impact: What is the impact of the problem, and why are Science Gateways needed to solve it?
- Compelling Nature: Why is your work notable and appealing to a broader audience?
- Solution Architecture: Detail the specific tools, code, and technology stack your team used and why.
- Outcomes: Share your achieved results or benchmarks.
- Expanded Access: Explain how your project promotes accessibility, sustainability, and reproducibility.
3. Student-Led Designation
Gateways 26 features specific awards for student poster presentations, which are judged by peers.
- Ensure you check the "student-led submission" option when applying in EasyChair.
- To qualify, the first author must be an enrolled student who is responsible for the majority of the work (there are no special requirements for the remaining authors).
4. Generative AI Policy
Because your projects rely heavily on AI, it is highly important to follow the conference's AI policy.
- You are permitted to use generative AI tools to prepare your manuscript, provided it does not result in false or plagiarized content.
- Mandatory Disclosure: You must disclose your use of generative AI within the "Acknowledgments" or "Appendix" section of your work.
5. Physical Poster Specifications (For the Conference)
If accepted, you will need to bring a physical, printed poster to the event in Washington, D.C.
- Dimensions: The physical poster must be a maximum width of 30 inches and a maximum length of 45 inches.
- Note: You will be sharing a bulletin board with one other poster presenter, so strict adherence to these maximum dimensions is required so your poster does not overlap with theirs.
6. Key Deadlines & Event Details
Final Team Deliverables
The final team deliverables provide the foundation for judging the major HackHPC@ADMI26 awards. The GitHub repository, README, source code, and project documentation will help judges evaluate the technical depth, clarity, and analytical approach behind each team’s work, especially for the Knowledge Graph Analytics Award. The website, visualization, or application will support judging for the Knowledge Portal Award by showing how effectively each team communicates their findings and helps users explore their chosen innovation track. The final presentation, project poster, and overall integration of the team’s work will be used to evaluate the Gateways Impact Award, which recognizes the project that best combines creativity, technical execution, communication, and alignment with this year’s hackathon theme. Teams that provide proof of poster submission to Gateways 2026 will also receive an additional 5 points toward their judging score.

Each team must complete and submit the following deliverables before their final presentation on the last day of the hackathon.
GitHub Repository
Each team must maintain a GitHub repository that includes:
- README.md with the project description and goals
- Source code for the project
- Comments in the code explaining key functionality
- Any files needed to run, view, or understand the project
Project Poster
Each team must submit a project poster in PDF format.
Final Presentation
Each team must submit a final presentation in PDF format. The presentation should include:
- Team members’ names
- Team members’ schools
- Team members’ photos
- Technology used, such as tools, HPC resources, AI resources, libraries, datasets, or platforms
- Chosen Innovation Track
- Innovation Track Visualization of the chosen theme
Website, Visualization, or Application
Each team must provide a website, visualization, or application that demonstrates their project idea and findings.
Proof of Poster Submission
Each team should provide evidence that their project poster was submitted to Gateways 2026.
Note: Teams that submit proof of poster submission to Gateways 2026 will receive +5 points added to their judging score.
